About Forkbell and how we get our numbers

Who writes Forkbell's articles, where every nutrition figure comes from, and how estimates are labelled as estimates.

Who writes this

Gajendra Singh Rathore builds Forkbell. He has logged food in most of the big calorie apps and quit all of them for the same reason: home-cooked food turns every meal into a search-and-guess exercise. Forkbell is the app he wanted instead — you type what you ate in your own words, and it matches verified nutrition data with household servings. He writes everything published here.

  • Building Forkbell, a calorie tracker and workout log, in public since September 2026.
  • Nutrition figures are read from published food composition tables, not from crowd-sourced app databases.
  • Every article names its sources and links them, so you can check any number yourself.
  • Not a doctor or a dietitian. Nothing here is medical advice, and articles say so where it matters.

How the numbers are produced

Nutrition writing is full of numbers with no provenance. These are the rules every article on this site follows.

Named sources, every time
Generic foods come from USDA FoodData Central. Indian dishes and ingredients come from the Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT 2017), published by the National Institute of Nutrition. Packaged items come from Open Food Facts. Each article lists what it used, with links.
Household servings, not only grams
Nobody weighs dal at the table. Every figure is given in a serving people actually use — a roti, a katori, a tablespoon, a cup — alongside the per-100g number that lets you check it.
Estimates are labelled
A home-cooked curry has no single correct calorie count; the oil alone can swing it by a third. Where a number is an estimate, the article says so and gives the range rather than a false decimal.
Corrections are dated
When a figure changes, the article's updated date changes with it and the correction is described in the text. Articles are revised, not silently swapped.
