Fat loss

Satiety

Satiety is how full a food keeps you and for how long, which depends far more on its protein, fibre, water and volume than on its calorie count alone.

Two meals of 500 kcal can leave you in entirely different states three hours later. Satiety is the name for that difference, and it is the single most useful lever for making a deficit survivable.

What makes food filling

Protein is the most reliably satiating macronutrient per calorie, which is why protein targets appear in almost every successful fat loss approach.

Fibre and water add bulk without energy. A large bowl of vegetables, a dal, a fruit and a soup all take up stomach volume that a handful of nuts of the same calorie value does not.

Physical form matters more than people expect. Whole fruit satisfies more than juice. Solid food satisfies more than a drink of identical composition. Chewing is part of the signal.

Energy density — calories per gram — ties the others together. Foods low in energy density let you eat a normal-looking amount of food inside a deficit.

Why it matters more than willpower

A diet that leaves you hungry every evening does not fail because you lacked resolve; it fails because hunger wins eventually, in everyone. Building meals from filling foods is not a moral improvement, it is engineering the plan so that less resolve is required.
