Whey protein

Whey protein is the fast-digesting protein fraction separated from milk during cheese-making, sold as a powder; it is a convenient concentrated protein source, not a requirement for building muscle.

Whey is milk protein with the fat and most of the lactose removed. It is complete, it digests quickly, it is high in leucine, and it happens to be cheap per gram of protein. None of that makes it special in the way the packaging suggests.

What the evidence supports

Protein supplementation improves gains in muscle mass and strength from resistance training — and the effect is essentially explained by the extra protein, not by the powder. People already reaching a good total from food see little additional benefit from adding a shake.

The three forms you will see

Concentrate is around 70 to 80 per cent protein by weight, keeps some lactose and fat, and is the best value. Isolate is around 90 per cent, with most lactose removed, useful if dairy sugar bothers you. Hydrolysate is partly pre-digested, costs the most and offers no practical advantage for ordinary training.

When it is actually useful

When you struggle to reach your protein target from meals, when you need protein that travels, or when appetite is low in a deficit. Those are real problems and a powder solves them cheaply.

If you already eat curd, paneer, eggs, dal and meat in sensible quantities, a tub of whey buys you convenience and nothing else.
