Protein synthesis

Muscle protein synthesis is the process by which the body builds new muscle protein; it rises after eating protein and after resistance training, and muscle is gained when it exceeds breakdown over time.

Muscle tissue is continuously built and broken down. Synthesis is the building side. Whether you gain, hold or lose muscle is the running balance between the two over weeks, not the size of any single spike.

What raises it

Two things, and they work better together than either alone. Eating protein raises synthesis for a few hours, with the response driven largely by the essential amino acid content of the meal. Resistance training raises it for considerably longer — a day or more in trained people — and makes the muscle more responsive to the protein that arrives during that window.

Why this justifies spreading protein out

Because the response to a single meal is limited and temporary, several moderate protein feedings across the day produce a better summed response than one very large one. Three to five meals containing roughly 0.3 to 0.4 g of protein per kilogram of bodyweight is the practical version of that finding.

Why it does not justify supplement marketing

The spike in synthesis after a meal is a laboratory measurement, not a proxy for muscle gained. Plenty of things raise it acutely without changing anything over twelve weeks. Total daily protein, progressive training and enough calories decide the outcome; timing adjusts it at the margin.
