Maintenance calories

Maintenance calories are the daily intake at which your weight holds steady over several weeks, measured from your own data rather than predicted by a formula.

Maintenance is the intake that keeps you where you are. It is the same quantity as total daily expenditure, but arrived at from the opposite direction: instead of predicting it from equations, you observe it.

How to find yours

Log everything for two to three weeks without trying to change anything, and weigh yourself most mornings. If your weekly average weight is flat, your average intake over that period is your maintenance. If it drifted, adjust by the difference and repeat.

Three weeks sounds slow. It is still faster than six months of arguing with a calculator that was never about you.

Why it is a range, not a number

Maintenance moves with activity, season, illness, sleep and how much you happen to be walking that month. A sensible way to hold it is as a band of roughly 200 kcal, with a weekly weight average as the check rather than a daily one.

What it is for

Two things. It is the anchor a deficit is subtracted from, and it is the destination when a diet ends. People who finish a fat loss phase and have no idea what their maintenance is tend to regain, not because of metabolic damage, but because they never learned what normal eating looks like for their body at its new size.
