Deload

A deload is a planned week of reduced training load or volume, taken to let accumulated fatigue clear so that performance can rise again; it is a scheduled part of training, not a break from it.

Fitness and fatigue both rise when you train hard. Performance is roughly the difference between them. After several weeks of accumulating both, cutting the training stress lets fatigue fall faster than fitness, and what you can lift goes up without you having trained harder.

What a deload looks like

Usually one of two approaches, held for a week. Keep the weights and halve the sets, or keep the sets and drop the load by 40 to 50 per cent. The first preserves the feel of heavy weight; the second is gentler on joints. Either is better than stopping entirely, which loses more than it recovers.

When to take one

Two signals. Planned: every four to eight weeks in a demanding programme, chosen in advance. Reactive: when the log shows performance falling across several sessions, sleep worsening, or joints complaining in a way that is not going away.

A log makes the reactive version possible, because "I feel flat" is unreliable and "my top set has dropped for three weeks" is not.

Why people skip them and regret it

A deload feels like giving something up, especially when motivation is high. The cost of skipping is rarely dramatic; it is a slow flattening of progress that gets blamed on the programme.
