Body recomposition

Body recomposition is losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time, which produces a visibly different body at a nearly unchanged bodyweight and is most achievable for beginners and people returning after a layoff.

Recomposition is the reason the scale is a poor judge of progress. Two people can both weigh 72 kilograms in March and in September and have had completely different six months.

Who it works best for

Three groups see it most clearly: people new to resistance training, people returning after time away, and people carrying a lot of fat relative to their muscle. In all three cases the body has an unusually strong signal to build muscle, and enough stored energy to fund it while eating at or slightly below maintenance.

For a lean, well-trained person who has been lifting for years, recomposition is slow to the point of being hard to detect. Those people generally do better alternating deliberate phases.

What it requires

A small deficit or maintenance intake, protein at the upper end of the useful range, resistance training with a load that actually increases over time, and enough sleep to recover from it. Remove any one of those and it becomes ordinary weight loss.

How to see it

Not on the scale. Use a training log, a tape measure and photographs taken in the same light every four weeks. Strength going up while weight holds flat is recomposition happening, reported by the only instrument that can see it.
